Seven Shrines

From the memoir of Orland of Ruhal (The Scrolls of Nef)

At the southern edge of our northern continent, their small rocky harbors had been conquered for so many thousands of years by every empire invading from north and south, that they acknowledged no interest in the particulars of domination. They were intent to trade their fish, purple dye they made from the local shellfish, and wood carvings from the local black wood, and to offer hospitality to foreigners sailing in for a respite from the outer winds. Seven shrines were maintained from seven religions, to ward off annihilation by whatever new invading army or navy it might be. The One Containing All was revered in each of them, although with different names from around the continent, and different saints and demi-gods and characters from the various stories of creation and salvation, from the Star-Making Spider to the Baker in the Sky.
